The Family 26 is a longer version of Family 24 with a modified hull. There are several reasons for the modification. One reason was that Family 24 has a planing hull with a deep V and slender rails along the bottom to the transom. This yields a good high speed performance but requires engine power and a cruising speed above 20 knots. The oil crisis in 1973 with rising fuel prices induced hull modifications for lower cruising speeds and less engine power. Hence the hull was made 2 ft longer and flattened by the stern. The Family 26 planes well at 16-18 knots.
Most of the Family 26 (and Family Fly 26) were built in 1975 and 1976. Since the economical problems became acute towards the end of 1976 and since there were many unpaid invoices from Volvo Penta for delivered engines, Botved Boats paid Volvo Penta with Family 26 boats. These boats were delivered without engines, powered by Volvo Penta and sold by GECEA in Gothenburg during the late 1970s. Different production years were specified, until 1979, but all these boats were built in 1975 and 1976. The cushions are dark blue in the 1975 boats and turquoise in the 1976 boats.
