Motor Mounts 21 Playmate/DC

Hey All,
I found this picture here on the Club website.

Does somebody have measurements or drawings of the steel 'motor mount' beam that is shown in the picture? I would like to make a motor mount in this style, so I am hoping that somebody who has already done this maybe has the measurements (or even a drawing) that they would be willing to share?

It is for a 21 playmate. But i think it would be the same for a 21DC?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I guess the measurements all depend on what motor you are installing.

Hello Frederik
I can show you the original mounted Iron beam of my dc21 sunrunner
It was equipped with a v6.
During the next weeks i will install a V 8 5,0 GXi
Hopefully on this beam which is very solid.
Notice that the stringer is thicker in the rear part.

Thank you Sven!! That is exactly what I needed. Now I know what it looks like. I will try and extrapolate the measurements for it. If you have any basic measurements on the beam it could be much appreciated. My plan is also to mount a V8.

Do you know whether this 'beam' is something home made? or if it was an 'off the shelf' item?

again, thank you for the pictures!

Hello Frederik,

There are drawings of the motor beam in the archive. Search under 21 DC. They are somewhat tedious to find and I have not kept any copies. If you do not have a beam that can be renovated, why not just laminate longitudinal bearers with inlaid steel plates for the motor mounts? Probably much cheaper and you will also get a stronger hull (probably unnecessary unless you go for a lot of power!) and no rust problem. You can see a picture of how it was done in my boat. Good Luck!

Hello Fredrik,
Just to add some additional info to your question. Attached is a sketch I received from a Coronet builder in Finland several years ago. He used it for Merc v8's but it is probably valid for any Chevy small block based gen 1 installation. I know it was used for both DC's and Playmates.

Good luck!
/Per.

My beam is surely original from 1982 when the boat was built. The motor was a piece of rust, the beam is in very good condition. But I can´t recognize my beam neither in the archive-drawing nor the drawing above.
I´ll do some measurement maybe already this weekend
Greetings

Do not forget a good corrision protection.
Galvanizing ( Hot Zn galvanazing ) is my recommendation.

Hello Sven

The Engine mounted is Volvo, isnt it?

I am gong to make the beam for a mercruiser V6, 4.3mpi - probably not the same measurements....

Hello Benjamin
Yes it was a Volvo Penta AQ 175 V6.
I bought a V8 Volvo Penta and the plan is to mount this motor on the beam the next weeks. "You have to go in there"

I´ll see if it will fit and i will give an update.

Greetings

Hi,
Provided that You use the original beam it will work. I changed from a VP AQ 175A/280 to a VP 570A/290DP. The basic casting of the engine blocks (Chevy) are the same but the V6 is of course shorter. The only thing that needs to be done is that the beam has to be mounted to the stringers further to the front.

Best Regards
Magnus

Making a different version.

I think it’s better if the bones are directly on the beam, and it looks nice when the engine is mounted.
A few corrections and the beam is ready for electroplating....
